  •  The audio features could be better
  •  Questions over the high cost of this device

The Philips Somneo Light focuses on sleep and night-time relaxation tools.

One of the most interesting features included in this light is the Relax Breath feature. Every light manufacturer under the sun works hard to create the best light-based tools for sleep and relaxation.

So, it is nice to see Philips head in a slightly different direction and bring in other applications.

By encouraging relaxing breathing patterns they may, in turn, help users fall asleep fast and get the most out of the light. Of course, the graduated colours of the sleep light help too, with some soft tones that calm the room down.

Another helpful night-time feature is the nightlight for just enough illumination for trips to the bathroom or kitchen. After all, you can’t expect this cure night-time habits and poor sleep straight away.

The whole design of this lamp is visually appealing, from that use of colours and tones to the hole in the centre. There is no functional point to this, other than to make the lamp look like a miniature Hepworth sculpture on your bedside table.

As with most other Philips wake-up lights, you can adjust the brightness to your desired level for the most comfortable experience.

There is a clear focus here on the sleep side of this light. But, you can still enjoy the same process and tones in reverse to wake up in the morning.

Philips claims that most of users asked found it easier to get up in the morning with this lamp. The morning alarm also has audio options with a radio function, ambient music or nature sounds.

The Philips Somneo Sleep and Wake-up Light has some great features, but it isn’t always easy to access them.

One issue to be aware of here regards the touch-sensitive controls. This approach can work really well when there are simple processes and obvious “buttons” on the display. Here, it seems to be a little more complicated.

There are users that find the process of setting the alarms and programmes too confusing and time-consuming.

One buyer complains that they can only set the lamp for a 15-minute session at night. It seems that 30 minutes should be possible, but they haven’t found that option.

Then there are the comments about the sound quality and audio options. Some would prefer an option of a more aggressive, traditional alarm to be sure of getting up in the morning.

Instead, they find that the tones and nature sounds are a little quiet and gentle. These sound issues are common with this sort of lamp. However, it is easy to expect a little more from this light because of the cost.

How do these issues affect the final verdict on this Philips Somneo Wake-up Alarm Light?

There are different ways of looking at this lamp. For some, it is an overpriced choice when other brands have similar functions for a lot less. The RelaxBreath feature is a nice touch when users get it to work for them.

It does add to the nice Sleep system. There are lots of helpful features here, but just not as many as you might expect from Phillips. The problems with the controls do place a question mark on the worth of this lamp.

In the end, it all depends on how much you value the design and adjustability of these lights, as well as the potential impact for better sleep. The gentle feel and attractive look may still make this Philips Somneo light a great choice for those with severe sleep problems this winter.
