Is The Lumie Vitamin L Slim Lightbox for Effective SAD Light Therapy Too Minimal To Be Effective?

Lumie Vitamin L SAD Lightbox

All SAD sufferers want a device that is simple and effective above anything else, and the Lumie Vitamin L SAD Lightbox could be a the answer. Lumie weren’t kidding when they called this their “slim” light box. There is a thin, tablet-like shape with a stand and a broad light source.

Many buyers will have high expectations from Lumie as a maker of light therapy solution. This is because they have a lot of experience in this field, and plenty of loyal customers. Is this a good example of their work, or is it too simplistic for most needs?

Pros:

  • No concerns about ease of use here
  • A portable, compact shape to suit different users
  • A great, effective light source

Cons:

  • A high cost
  • It has to be plugged into the mains

The minimalist approach of this Lumie Vitamin L SAD Lightbox, and its effects, do win over a lot of supporters.

There isn’t really a lot to this device in turns of function or special features, and there are pros and cons to that approach. Starting with the positives, there is the sense that this is an easy-to-use-device for anyone dealing with the effecting of SAD. All we have to do is plug it in, switch it on and that’s it.

Minimalism also comes into play with the shape and size. There are a number of benefits to creating such a slim model with a large display. Mostly, it provides a great middle ground between a device that is compact and portable, and one large enough to provide a wide field of light.

There are 2 orientations for landscape or portrait with this large 20 x 28cm light source. Portability is important for all those that want to use this at work or on the move, rather than first thing in the morning. The use of the simple stand and small dimensions make it easier for users to adapt to their schedule.

The added bonus here is that this is still a pretty good light source, with some helpful elements. This is clearly a strong light source that will work well for many people over the 30 minute sessions. The key features here are the 10,000 lux output at 20 cm, the use of nice, soft LEDs and the rippled diffuser. Those white LEDS aren’t too bright or clinical. This is also a certified medical device, and the positive impact on SAD symptoms backs that up.

The problem with the minimalist approach of this Lumie “Slim” SAD light box is that some people will always want a little more.

When it comes to the negative side of this Lumie device, there are some that wonder if it is a bit too expensive for what it is. There are cheaper devices that do similar things in regard to the lux and sessions, but perhaps without such a good diffuser or build quality. Still, some expect a few more tricks and conveniences for the cost. Are they simply paying more because it is Lumie, and Lumie know that they have enough brand-loyal followers to get away with it?

There is another issue with this slim, minimal design, and that is the lack of a battery. Users have to keep this plugged in via a wall-outlet. There are a couple of concerns here. First of all, this is problematic for those that want to set up in the perfect spot, as it limits reach and portability a little.

It also raises questions over the energy efficiency. This is sold as an energy efficient model because of the use of LEDs and low output, but grid-based power sources instead of batteries goes against this slightly.

Summary: is this Lumie Vitamin L SAD lightbox for SAD still recommendable with this in mind?

In the end, the recommendation here comes down to the priorities of the buyer. There is no doubt that the light source and output is effective, and there is a lot to gain from one of these sessions.

However, some will like it more than others. Those that want a simple, portable device that doesn’t compromise on the quality of the LEDs would love this basic, plug and play Lumie SAD lamp. Those that expect lots of features and extra aids will be disappointed.
